Biography

The up-and-coming Austrian baritone Günter Haumer is internationally acclaimed for his performance versatility.

He has sung under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Thielemann, Ivor Bolton, Jesús López-Cobos, Fabio Luisi, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Philippe Herreweghe, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and Dan Ettinger, among others. He has appeared at the most important concert halls and festivals such as the Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Konzerthaus, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Dresdner Philharmonie, Bayreuther Festspiele, Semperoper Dresden, Cité de la musique Paris, Tel Aviv Opera, Osterfestspiele Salzburg, Theater an der Wien, Wiener Festwochen, the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts Texas, Utrecht Alte Musik Festival, Warschauer Philharmonie, Teatro Mayor de Bogotá, Styriarte Graz and the Fundación Juan March.

Günter Haumer has performed several roles such as Don Giovanni, Il Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Giorgio Germont in La Traviata, Zar in Zar und Zimmermann, Ping in Turandot, Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Danilo in Die Lustige Witwe, Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus and Zebul in Jephtha. Günter Haumer is also demanded within the contemporary music scene due to his excellent musical comprehension. For instance, he performed the main part at premieres such as Immer noch Loge by Gordon Kampe at the Bayreuther Festspiele or in Christoph Ehrenfellners Judas and the role of Amfortas in Mea culpa by Christoph Schlingensief, apart from works by Friedrich Cerha, Luciano Berio, José-María Sánchez-Verdú, Detelf Glanert and Jonathan Harvey among others.

He has worked under the direction of Rolando Villazón, Deborah Warner, Nikolaus Habjan, Christiane Lutz, and Philipp Harnoncourt along with others.

Günter Haumer has been a member of the Ensemble of the Volksoper Vienna since 2012.

As a Lieder singer, Günter is recognized as one of the best per­form­ers of the genre, often accompanied by Roger Vig­noles, Julius Drake and James Baillieu. He counts sev­eral CD and DVD recordings for labels such as Hyperion, cpo, Odradek Records, ORF Edition as well as TV and Radio broadcastings. As an example, for Richard Strauss´ anniversary, he took part in the recording of the complete edition of songs by Hyperion Records London, accompanied by Roger Vignoles.

The baritone firstly completed his musical education at the Musikhochschule Wien in Clarinet and Piano. He later studied singing at the Music University in Vienna and the Royal College of Music in London.

Besides his activities as a singer, Günter Haumer teaches singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
