Biography
Born in the Principality of Andorra, he studied theater at Barcelona’s Instituto del Teatro and history at the University of Barcelona. He began his career as an actor in movies, theater and television and later became a director, working mostly in theater in Spain. His professional directing debut in opera was in Barcelona in 2003 with Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers. Since then, his repertoire has included a wide variety of styles and periods, from opera buffa (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, L’Elisir d’Amore, Cosí Fan Tutte, L’ Italiana in Algeri), opera seria (Adriana Lecouvreur, Krol Roger, Werther, Un Ballo in Maschera, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Salome, Midsummer Night’s Dream, Madama Butterfly, Ariadne Auf Naxos), Baroque (Combattimento), operetta (Die Csárdásfürstin), zarzuela (De lo Humano y Divino) and musicals (Rent, Man of La Mancha, Into the Woods, Love Life.) His work have been seen in Madrid, Barcelona, Bogotá, Bilbao, London,Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Mainz, Basel, Freiburg, Aachen, Darmstadt, Oberhausen, San Lorenzo del Escorial, Oviedo, Omán, Lisbon, San Francisco, Boston, Peralada, Buenos Aires, Helsinki, Oslo and San Sebastian. In 2008 the magazine Opernwelt named him Director of the Year for his production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Recent engagements include a new production of Lohengrin by R. Wagner in Chemnitz (Germany), Saint Saens’s Samson et Dalila at the Deustche Oper am Rhein, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in Freiburg, Il trovatore in Helsinki, Madama Butterfly by Puccini in Oviedo and Sevilla and Gounod’s Faust in Venice’s La Fenice.
