Biography

Pedro Amaral is the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Metropolitan Orchestra in Lisboa. He was the principal conductor of the National Conservatory Orchestra (2007/08) and the Sond'Arte Electric Ensemble (2007/10). 


Winner of the Prix de Rome in 2004, he studied orchestral conducting with Peter Eötvos and Emilio Pomárico. He acted as assistant of Stockhausen and as passionate of the contemporary music they emphasize his direction of works of Berio, Boluez, Stockhausen and his own compositions. A lover of Mozart's operas, he has conducted all of his mature operas and has highlighted his interpretations of the Germanic orchestral repertoire, from Beethoven to Bruckner, from Schubert to Brahms and R. Strauss. 


He has conducted the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir, the Madeira Classical Orchestra, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the Moravia Philharmonic in Czechoslovakia, the Albanian National Orchestra, the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany, the Bayersiches Landesjugenorchestra, the Polish Radio Orchestra, the Porto Alegre Orchestra, the Ensemble musikFabrik, the Ensemble Art Respirant in Japan, the Ensemble Vertixe Sonora in Spain, the choirs of the WDR, the RTVE, the Radio Polonia, the Góreki Chamber Choir, Voces Caelestes, Lisbon Cantat, among others. 


Pedro Amaral has been a Professor at the University of Évora since 2007 and a Member of the Academy of Fine Arts since 2017. He is the author of several works, among them the operas "El Sueño"; (London, 2010) "Beaumarchais"; (Lisbon, National Theater, 2017). 


He began his composition studies with Fernando Lopes-Graça in 1986, graduated from the Lisbon School of Music in 1994 and the National Conservatory of Music in Paris in 1998. In Paris, he completed a Master's and a Doctorate in Contemporary Musicology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in 2003.
